WEC accepting applications for 2012 Youth Tour

December 01, 2011

Several high school juniors from Wiregrass Electric Cooperative's (WEC) service area will have the opportunity to join other students from across the state and nation at the Rural Electric Youth Tours.  Each year, WEC selects up to ten high school juniors to attend the Alabama Rural Electric Association (AREA) Youth Tour to Montgomery, to be held March 6-8, 2012.

From those ten, two are selected by an interview process to attend the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Youth Tour to Washington, DC, June 16-21, 2012.  Pictured here are the 2011 Washington Youth Tour representatives, Aaron McDaniel and Madison Hendrix.

"The program is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about our state and national government, visit historical places and attend leadership workshops," says Cary Hatcher, Manager of Member Relations and Youth Tour coordinator.  "All expenses and travel for both tours are paid by WEC."

An application and a brochure describing the Youth Tour are available on the WEC website or may be picked up at any Wiregrass Electric office.  The deadline for entries is Jan. 15, 2012.  A video about the Washington Youth Tour is available on YouTube

WEC requires that the nominated student be a junior in high school, and they must be a dependent of a member-consumer of Wiregrass Electric Cooperative. For questions, contact Cary Hatcher at 334-944-7115 (office) or email at wec@wiregrass.coop
