  • Joint memberships with the Cooperative will be in compliance with the Cooperative’s By-Laws.

If applicant is currently a member in good standing with the Cooperative, additional identification may not be required.
  • Membership with the Cooperative is not transferable. If a person with a residential account membership with the Cooperative who is already a member requests an additional electric service, an additional membership fee is not necessary.

Deposits

  • Any member who terminates membership with the Cooperative will be fully refunded all membership and deposit amounts (fees) only after proper settlement of final bill. Upon termination of service, deposits will be applied against unpaid bills of the member and if any balance remains, will then be refunded to member.
  • If a member has multiple accounts and the deposit is recorded on an account which may be disconnected, deposit will be transferred to remaining active account.
  • Member deposits for electric service shall not bear any interest for the Cooperative member should a deposit be refunded to the member for any reason.
  • An established residential member adding additional electric services in his/her name will not be required to pay an additional deposit if one of the following conditions are met:
    • The member is considered in good standing (not on the collection list with no returned checks) for at least 12 months.
    • The member furnishes a letter of good standing from previous supplier.
    • The member has a green flag on credit report.
  • If a member is deceased, the surviving spouse may have the account changed into his/her name upon payment of a $5 membership fee without an additional deposit, provided the account has a satisfactory past 12 month payment history and upon proof of member’s death. In this case, the existing deposit for the account will be transferred to the new account in the surviving spouse’s name.
Commercial
  • For any commercial, large power, or industrial applicant, all security deposits will be based on the following:
    • Two times the commercial, larger power or industrial applicant’s monthly bill based on a 12 month usage history of the meter location for the member applicant, or
    • The Cooperative’s engineering analysis of the applicant’s load data for the account location if there is not an existing meter.
  • Payment of security deposits for commercial, large power, or industrial member accounts can be secured through:
    • Cash, check, or money order payment,
    • Bank-issued irrevocable letter of credit, or
    • A general obligation warrant/letter of commitment from a governmental governing body for a state, city, or county school system.
    • A member or former member to assign his/her capital credits to the Cooperative as security for the payment of a member’s electric bill. The value of the capital credits shall be determined in accordance with discount rate as set forth hereinabove relating to the payment of capital credits to estates. The member shall be required to execute an assignment approved by the Cooperative. (Please see Policy 303, Capital Credits).
    • If the member is an established non-profit church with a good payment history with the Cooperative for the previous 24 months, with good payment history being defined as the account not having been on the delinquent list during the previous 24 months, then the deposit will be waived for the member by the Cooperative. This applies only to established non-profit churches and does not apply to non-profit churches establishing an account for the first time with the Cooperative.
  • If a commercial, large power, or industrial member is disconnected for non-payment, they will be required to establish a deposit of a minimum of two and one-half times their monthly bill to reconnect electric service.
  • If service requires construction of lines, billing and fees for line extensions may require additional aid-to-construction charge as determined by staking engineer (see below).

Disconnect Service

To disconnect service, you may call, go by any Wiregrass Electric location, or use our online form on our customer portal.

You may be asked to provide a picture identification if you come by an office. If you call, you will be asked to give your social security number. The account must be listed in your name in order to disconnect service. A spouse or roommate cannot disconnect service at a location if their name is not listed on the account.

There is no charge for disconnecting service. Your meter will be read-out on the disconnect date and any remaining energy charges will appear on your final bill.

If you are relocating outside of the Wiregrass Electric service area, please make sure we have a correct forwarding address for any future capital credit payments due to you and for proper processing of your final bill. If your account is in good standing, your original service connection deposit and membership fee will be credited to your final bill as well.

Wiregrass Electric has several service locations throughout the southeast Alabama area. Services are available at all locations Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. View our Contact Us page to see all our locations.
