Understanding Your Wiregrass Electric Bill

Wiregrass Electric Bill

At Wiregrass Electric Cooperative (WEC), we believe knowledge is power, especially when it comes to our members. We strive to be transparent and make sure members understand their cooperative and the monthly electric bill they receive.

Understanding the itemized bill can help members wisely manage their energy use and take control of the money they are spending on electricity.

  1. Account Information: Your unique identifier with WEC, including name and billing address.
  2. Distribution Expense: The cost of maintaining and operating the electricity distribution system. This is a fixed monthly charge for all accounts.
  3. Demand Expense: This charge reflects your household’s contribution to WEC’s highest electricity demand day during peak hours, which typically occurs from 6 to 9 a.m. from November through February. The rate is currently $2.50 per kilowatt, or kW, but will be $4 per kW beginning in March.
  4. Basic Energy Charge: This figure reflects the total kilowatt-hours used multiplied by the rate per kWh — basically, your meter reading. WEC lowered this kWh rate by 10.5% last year and will lower it again in March from $0.0996 to $$0.0948. That’s an overall drop of 15% since 2024, when WEC adopted a separate demand rate.
  5. Alabama Utility Tax: A 6.2% tax applied to the total electric bill, as per state regulations.
  6. Operation Round Up Foundation: An optional charitable program where members can round up their bills to the nearest dollar. The extra money goes to community projects and initiatives in the Wiregrass.
  7. Total Amount Due: This is the full amount you need to pay, including all charges, taxes, and optional programs.
  8. Monthly Energy Use Comparison: This information helps you track and compare your electricity use month to month.
  9. Daily Average of kWh Usage: By averaging your monthly use into a daily figure, WEC helps you understand your daily consumption patterns.
  10. Important Information: This section is where we list any critical messages from WEC to keep you informed.
