A programmable thermostat is often recommended to control energy use and expense.
The Department of Energy estimates that you can save 10% a year on heating and cooling costs by turning your thermostat back by 7 to 10 degrees for 8 hours a day from its normal setting. The closer you keep your indoor temperature to the outdoor temperature, the lower your costs.
The same level of comfort isn’t always necessary when nobody is home or when you are asleep. Programmable thermostats do the job for you, so you don’t have to remember to adjust your thermostat.
Most brands allow you to have multiple daily settings. In the summer, you can set a programmable thermostat to adjust after you leave for work and again before you get home, so your home is already comfortable when you get there.
