Warm summer months in the Wiregrass Electric Cooperative (WEC) often mean a dip in a backyard pool. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination, and Wiregrass Electric Cooperative wants to make sure members stay safe.
Here Are Some Tips From SafeElectricity:
- All electric outlets within 20 feet of a pool, hot tub, or spa should have ground fault circuit interrupters. GFCIs can prevent shock by cutting off power in a dangerous situation.
- Keep electric appliances and devices 10 feet from the swimming pool. Use battery-operated devices when possible.
- Never swim during a thunderstorm.
- If a swimmer feels electricity or appears to be shocked, do not dive in or you could be shocked as well. Turn off the power and use a fiberglass shepherd’s hook to pull the victim out of the water.
- When you leave the pool, do not touch any electrical items until you are dry. Never touch electric items when you are wet or standing in water. Children playing with sprinklers or hoses should only do so far away from electric appliances or devices.
WEC recommends a thorough preseason inspection of all pool equipment by a licensed and bonded contractor to ensure a clean, safe, and fully functional pool.
