Conserve Energy During Peak-Demand Season

Wiregrass Electric Cooperative (WEC) typically hits peak demand on the coldest day of the year between the hours of 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.

That peak determines the capacity we are required to buy from our wholesale provider to meet our members’ energy needs at any given time. It’s why we send out alerts about peak-demand events during the winter.

Members pay a demand expense charge determined by the highest level of electricity they require at any given moment between the hours of 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., November through February. By controlling their energy consumption during peak times, they will avoid setting a higher demand expense charge. Limiting the use of appliances with high energy requirements, such as heat pumps, emergency heat strips, water heaters, clothes dryers, stoves/ovens, and other similar devices, can help maintain a lower power bill.

Follow these tips to reduce demand during peak times:

  • Install a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust your home’s temperature during peak hours. Or, adjust your thermostat during peak hours so your unit doesn’t run as much.
  • Install a timer on your water heater to stop it from cycling on and off during peak hours.
  • Seal gaps around windows and doors.
  • Delay running your dishwasher or doing the laundry until off-peak hours.
  • Unplug any electronics or devices not in use.
