As the winter fades into spring, the threat of strong thunderstorms increases in Alabama. Wiregrass Electric Cooperative (WEC) encourages members to be prepared before severe weather strikes.
- Know where you are: Know where your home, school, or work is located on a map to help you gauge the potential impact of severe weather near you.
- Plan: Identify safe places in your home or other buildings. Make a kit with essential supplies.
- Get alerts: There are multiple ways to get severe weather alerts, including on your cellphone. When severe weather is possible, make sure your devices are fully charged.
- Get inside: If severe weather approaches, get into a safe structure. Storms can escalate quickly, and lightning can strike from up to 10 miles away. Stay away from windows and doors. Unplug appliances and electronics.
- Wait: Remain indoors 30 minutes after you last hear thunder.
