Spring is a time of transition from colder, shorter days to warmer, longer ones. Before we know it summer will be upon us, and we’ll be looking for ways to stay cool in extreme heat.
Take some time now to evaluate your home’s energy efficiency.
- Have your home’s heating and cooling system inspected and serviced by a
professional. Make sure you regularly change your unit’s filter.
- A well-placed tree, shrub or vine can provide shade, act as a windbreak and
help reduce your energy bills. Deciduous trees planted on the south and
west sides will help keep a house cooler in the summer but let sun in
during the winter. Trailing vines on lattice or a trellis can provide shade
while still letting cool breezes through an area.
- Give your home an energy assessment to identify areas that need
addressing. Key places to check include around windows and exterior
doors, electric outlets, plumbing and lighting fixtures. Also, check for open
fireplace dampers. Seal any leaks with caulk or weather stripping.
