Wiregrass Electric Cooperative (WEC) is proud to participate in regional partnerships, keeping tax dollars in our area to support economic development.
Most recently, we committed to a $3,260,000 sewer line project to serve the Houston County Industrial Park located off U.S. 231 near the Florida state line.
WEC leveraged money we collect for a mandated 2.2% utility tax to qualify for the Growing Alabama tax credit, a state program that allows eligible taxpayers—such as businesses and utilities—to donate to economic development projects and receive tax credits equal to their contribution.
WEC and South Alabama Electric Cooperative in Troy each committed $300,000 in tax credits for the sewer line that will open up 240-plus acres within the industrial park for future development.
Other partners include River Bank & Trust, $1,000,000; Regions Bank and Great Southern Wood, $500,000 each; Troy Bank & Trust, $250,000; MidSouth Bank, $207,500; Synovus Bank and Friend Bank, $100,000 each.
The Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce, Houston County Commission, Dothan Utilities, and the Houston County Water Authority made the economic development project possible, along with the continuing support of our local state legislative delegation.
