Severe Weather Season Is Approaching

Spring brings the risk of severe weather, with everything from flash floods to high winds and tornadoes possible. Be ready and know how to respond during a weather emergency.

  • Know the best places to go during severe weather, wherever you may be—the lowest level of a building or an interior room, or a hallway with no windows.
  • Have multiple ways to get weather alerts, including your cellphone. If you know bad weather is possible, make sure to fully charge your devices.
  • Go indoors when severe weather approaches. Lightning can strike from 10 miles away. Stay away from windows and doors. Unplug any devices and appliances if possible. Wait 30 minutes after you last hear a clap of thunder before going back outside.
  • If you get caught driving in heavy rain, avoid flooded areas on roads. It doesn’t take much water to flood a car engine. Do not drive over any downed power lines.
