  • Keep ladders 10 feet away from overhead power lines.
  • Unplug electric tools when not in use.
  • Repair or replace frayed cords or damaged tools. Make sure extension cords used outdoors are rated for that use.
  • Keep electric cords away from water and damp areas.
  • Whether you DIY or hire a professional, call 811 before you dig to avoid underground lines.
  • Schedule maintenance for your air conditioning system.
  • Change your AC filter regularly, especially if you have seasonal allergies.
  • Window treatments can prevent heat loss through the windows of your home.
  • Invest in a programmable thermostat or adjust your thermostat so your home is warmer when you are gone and cooler when you are at home.
  • Use ceiling fans for a wind chill effect when at home. Turn them off when you leave.
