WEC to Conduct Local Youth Tour & Offer Scholarships

While the coronavirus pandemic caused organizers to cancel the Montgomery and Washington, D.C., youth tours, Wiregrass Electric Cooperative (WEC) is offering an alternative educational experience to high school juniors.

On April 12, WEC will conduct its own version of the Youth Tour at its corporate headquarters. The local version will provide many of the experiences that past Montgomery Youth Tour participants have encountered like:

  • Educational presentations: Delegates will still learn about the nation’s history and the role electric cooperatives have played in it.
  • Learning from lawmakers: Local legislators like state Sen. Donnie Chesteen and state Reps. Jeff Sorrells and Paul Lee will discuss governmental operations with delegates and answer their questions.
  • Leadership development: Participants will encounter team-building activities and learn leadership skills throughout the day.
  • Networking: Attendees will come from a variety of schools, presenting chances to make new friends.

In an exciting addition, all 10 delegates selected to participate will receive a $1,500 scholarship!

Applications for the local Youth Tour are available online at our website and at local WEC offices. Applicants must be high school juniors who are dependents of WEC members.

The deadline to apply is March 1.
