Wiregrass Electric Cooperative's (WEC) Operation Round Up Provides Scholarships

Traditional and nontraditional students, as well as those interested in the Wallace Community College lineworker program, have until April 3 to apply for scholarships through Wiregrass Electric Cooperative’s Operation Round Up program.

The Operation Round Up Foundation is funded by cooperative members who choose to round up their electric bills to the nearest whole dollar. An annual golf tournament also raises money for the program. The money is used for scholarships, community grants, and the Silent Heroes of the Wiregrass program. A 9-member Operation Round Up board, made up of WEC members, oversees the charitable foundation.

Last year, the cooperative awarded 22 scholarships — 19 traditional scholarships and 3 lineworker scholarships.

Scholarship applicants can include traditional high school seniors or homeschool students who plan to attend an accredited 2-year or 4-year college, technical school, vocational school, or continuing education institution in Alabama.

Nontraditional applicants are those attending an accredited 2-year or 4-year college, technical school, vocational school, or continuing education institution in the state. Nontraditional applicants must meet at least 1 of these criteria: delayed enrollment into postsecondary education, financially independent for financial aid purposes, has dependents other than a spouse, or is a single parent.

Scholarship applicants for the 8-week preapprentice electrical lineworker program at Wallace Community College in Dothan should be interested in pursuing the program and show demonstrated financial need. Prerequisites for the Wallace Community College lineworker program include a 2-year driving history from the Alabama Highway Patrol state troopers’ office and a Department of Transportation physical examination. Lineworker applicants must be at least 18 years old. To learn more about the Wallace program, visit the Wallace website.

Applications are available on our website through a link under the website’s Operation Round Up page. A required educator recommendation form is also available online. Additional eligibility requirements and instructions are found at the beginning of each form.
