Charity tournament marks fifth year on the greens

Wiregrass Electric Cooperative’s golf tournament celebrated another successful year of bringing golfers together for a good cause.

The Operation Round Up Charitable Golf Tournament was held Sept. 3 at Dothan’s Highland Oaks Golf Course, raising around $40,000 to help fund charitable causes throughout the Wiregrass. The fifth annual tournament had more participants than the previous year and received a boost from one of the cooperative’s finance partners.

CoBank, a member-owned cooperative bank that works with industries in rural areas, presented Wiregrass Electric Cooperative’s charitable foundation with a check for $15,000.

The dedication and support from sponsors, vendors, WEC team members, Highland Oaks staff and golfers make this special event a success each year.

“CoBank wants to give back to our members and their communities, and the best way is to utilize programs that our customers are currently using,” CoBank Vice President Luke Gaines says. “Wiregrass gives to the community, so we were able to match the funding that they gave, and it goes directly to their community base rather than to some national organization. It’s a great way to reach the individuals they serve and help on a daily basis.”

The tournament raises money for the co-op’s Operation Round Up Charitable Foundation, which is funded primarily by cooperative members who round up their monthly bills to the next dollar. The golf tournament started in 2022 to supplement the foundation and has added more than $200,000 to the charitable efforts.

ORU funds support scholarships for local students, grants for nonprofit organizations, equipment for first responders and a variety of community projects.

An appointed board of cooperative members oversees the ORU Charitable Foundation and how these funds are invested back into the community.

If you missed this year’s golf tournament, there is always next year. Keep an eye out in the spring and early summer months for announcements about our 2027 ORU Charitable Golf Tournament.
